Prioritize Work

Shorter-term — day-to-day triage once the destination's already decided.

"What's the one thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will become easier or unnecessary?"

— Gary Keller & Jay Papasan, The ONE Thing

The ONE Thing calls this the Domino Effect: success stacks like a line of falling dominoes — hit the first, most important target, and it knocks down the smaller tasks that depended on it. It's as much a mindset shift as a technique: measuring yourself by what you actually produced, not by how busy you looked getting there.

1

Eisenhower Matrix

Sort everything into four boxes. The line worth remembering: what's important is rarely urgent, and what's urgent is rarely important — which is exactly why this matrix exists instead of just working off whatever's loudest.

Urgent
Not Urgent
Important

Do It Now

Crises, deadlines, pressing problems

Schedule It

Planning, relationships, growth

Not Important

Delegate It

Interruptions, other people's tasks

Delete It

Time-wasters, busywork

2

The 80/20 Rule (Pareto Principle)

Roughly 20% of your effort drives 80% of your results — named after economist Vilfredo Pareto, and it shows up everywhere: resources, time, customers, projects. For individuals, it means auditing your week and doubling down on the few activities that actually move things forward. For teams and companies, it's the same logic applied to which customers, products, or initiatives get the attention. The habit underneath it: simplify your goals to fewer priorities, pursue them with clarity and consistency, and cut the energy drains — extra meetings, low-value tasks, draining people — that don't earn their place in the 20%.

80% of results come from 20% of effort
Examples
  • 20% of clients drive 80% of sales
  • 20% of bugs cause 80% of crashes
  • 20% of your daily work tasks give you 80% of your real results
  • You wear 20% of the clothes in your closet 80% of the time
  • You spend 80% of your free time with 20% of your friends

Most Important Things (MITs)

Pick your 3 most important tasks for the week and get them done — everything else is negotiable, these aren't. A simple constraint that keeps a long list from quietly replacing an actual priority.

Tip — Weekly Planning Ritual

Block 30 minutes on a Sunday night — it can save 10 hours in the week ahead. Sit down before Monday starts and decide what matters, so the week doesn't decide it for you.
